THE ORIGIN OF BIODYNAMIC PSYCHOLOGY ®

Biodynamic Psychology is a fascinating approach to therapy that was founded and developed by my mother Gerda Boyesen from 1954 in Oslo, Norway. Gerda was a clinical psychologist who believed in a humanist approach to healing—one that recognises the importance of the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

Her journey into this unique blend of therapy began with her training in both clinical psychology and dynamic physiotherapy. She had the privilege of studying under Ola Raknes, a notable figure who was a student and colleague of Wilhelm Reich.

Wilhelm Reich was instrumental in merging psychiatry with physiotherapy by founding the Norwegian Vegetotherapy Association which was a space where both professions could thrive together. This environment allowed Gerda to soak up knowledge from both fields, shaping her understanding of the connection between body and emotions.

In 1969, Gerda took Over Ola Raknes’s practice in London, where I joined her first training program, one that my sister Mona-Lisa Boyesen had already joined four years prior as Gerda was fine tuning her training program in Norway. She began training others on a large scale in her already developed methods. Her work not only transformed individual lives but also set the stage for future generations of Biodynamic therapists who wanted to explore the profound connection between the body and emotional well-being.

Through her innovative approach, Gerda has left a lasting legacy as a woman in the field of body oriented Psychotherapy, emphasizing that true healing involves addressing both the physical and emotional aspects of our experiences.
